Introduced by the Moors, azulejos (originally white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully embraced by the Portuguese when their king Manuel I, on a visit to the Alhambra palace in Southern Spain, was mesmerized by the stunning beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The king, awestruck by the interior beauty of the Alhambra, immediately ordered that his own palace in Portugal be decorated with similar wall tiles.

As a tile-laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora. In the game Azul™, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they've placed their tiles to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets; wasted supplies harm the player's score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

  • Players compete as artisans decorating the walls of the Royal Palace of Dvora. By carefully drafting the correct quantity and style of tiles, the most clever artisans plan ahead to maximize the beauty of their work (not to mention their scores!) while ensuring they waste no supplies in the process.
  • There is a certain ease and elegance to the rules of Azul, a certain beauty to the components, and a surprising depth of gameplay and addiction to the game.
  • Easy to learn (simple and easy to teach a newbie), but requires some strategy—both defensive and offensive (making it challenging enough to keep the interest of the experienced player).
  • Box contents: 100 resin tiles (5 different designs with 20 tiles of each design), 4 player boards, 9 factory displays, 4 scoring markers, 1 starting player marker (cardboard in 1st edition, resin tile in later editions), 1 linen bag, and 1 rulebook.
  • Award Winning: Spiel des Jahres Winner, Origins Awards Best Family Game, Mensa Select Winner, Golden Geek Best Family Board Game Winner, and Cardboard Republic Architect Laurel Winner.
