Find the hidden crystals!

What's a geode? It's a geological rock formation that contains a cavity lined with crystals. The most common "find" inside a geode is clear quartz crystals, but some have colored crystals—fluorite, calcite, amethyst or pyrite (fool's gold). There's no way to tell what's inside a geode until you break it apart—but that's the most exciting part!

For a fun and unique project for your budding geologist, try out Break Your Own Geode™ from GeoCentral®. Each unopened geode ranges in size from 1.5 to 2.5 inches in diameter and is easy to break open and examine. Simply place an unopened geode in a bag or sock, give it a firm hit with a hammer (not included) and pull out your split geode. 80 percent of these small geodes have a hollow center filled with beautiful sparkling crystals, each one unique in its own way. Imagine treasures your child will find and the abundance of possibilities the excitement of this fun activity could spark!
