The sheep is one of the earliest domesticated animals. There are over one billion sheep in the world, and their wool is one of the earliest discovered and most frequently utilized animal fibers. There are over 200 breeds of domestic sheep in the world today! These Safari Sheep are beautifully detailed, hand-painted models of real-life sheep. There are a few varieties of Safari Sheep available; White and Black. Please select the one you would like from the drop down menu above.

----------------------------------

White - The flocking behavior of sheep, and their inclination to follow a dominant sheep, allowed for them to be domesticated over 10,000 years ago. Sheep are like goats, and both are in the subfamily Caprinae. However, they are in separate genera and thus any hybrid animals produced will be infertile, like the mule.

Black - Unlike many other animals, white coloration in sheep is a dominant gene, rather than a recessive gene or mutation like albinism and leucism. Therefore, black sheep are fairly rare, occurring in about 25% of cases when two white sheep that carry the recessive black gene produce offspring. We all know the nursery rhyme "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep", but you may not know that this poem dates back to 1731 and has remained largely unchanged in over 200 years. The term "black sheep" is used to describe a member of a group or family who stands out and is not like the rest.
